ShotSumo

What it does

ShotSumo captures a region, a window, or a full screen, then drops you into a fast annotation editor — rectangles, ellipses, arrows, and a pixelate tool for redacting sensitive areas. Copy the result to your clipboard or save it as a PNG, always at full native resolution.

It runs on macOS 26 and later, lives entirely in the menu bar with no dock icon, and stays out of your way until you trigger it with a menu item or a global hotkey.

ShotSumo 1.0.0 is free to download and fully functional, with no watermark, no subscription, and no in-app purchases of any kind. A future version may add an optional paid tier; if it does, the terms will be published before anything can be bought — see the Terms of Use.

Troubleshooting

Screenshots come out blank, or capture does nothing. ShotSumo needs the Screen Recording permission: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording. This only takes effect after ShotSumo is relaunched — granting it while the app is running does nothing until you quit and reopen the app. If capture still returns a blank image, remove ShotSumo from that list, add it again, and relaunch.

The hotkey doesn't do anything. Region capture is ⌘⇧9 by default; window capture and full-screen capture ship unbound and have to be assigned first. All three are rebindable in Preferences.

Where the files go. Save (⌘S) writes straight to the configured folder with no dialog — ~/Downloads by default, named ShotSumo_yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss.png. The folder is configurable in Preferences, and there's an option to reveal the file in Finder after saving. Copy (⌘C) puts the flattened PNG on the clipboard at full resolution.

Getting out. Esc cancels the selection overlay, and also closes the editor. A click without a drag, or a right-click, cancels the selection too.
